Another year, another skill, another newspost

*POOF* There's summoning for you. It requires the quest Wolf Whistle to be started, which is reminiscent of good old herblore.
Seems that you can use whatever you summon for good or bad or not at all. Is this a good thing?
After stabbing the wilderness in the back, duelling PvP to the death at dawn, closing shop on the free market and effectively banning players' ability to give each other gifts (at least now Teaberry gets an excuse for forgetting birthdays and that git still has my dlegs and halberd) ... by comparison, yes. Of course there isn't much that could be worse.

And that's where I have to admit we've been slacking off a little these last few months. Personally I've been busy and a little fed up with rs like I am every hand full of months. I'm sure I'll get over it soon after all I’m still an addict.
On top of that some of us have been working on improving systems for the price guide.

Guides and calculators will be updated as we gather the data required and as it crosses our paths. You are welcome to suggest changes in this thread on the feedback and suggestions forum.

Price guide updated with exchange values

Well you were promised fast ;-) Fi has honoured that by updating our database to handle the exchange prices, and we've started to add them. You'll find them included in our price guide, and I'm sure Darwin will offer them soon too. Prices change constantly, but you can help to keep them up to date by pointing out any changes in exchange prices here.

Enjoy!

With the latest quest we take a closer look at goblin religion and we have a little fun with the old concept of dyeing goblin mail, which the powers that be finally decided we can wear.

Go out adventuring with Zanik once again and find out what happens in Land of the Goblins.

Calculator Update

As some of you may have noticed, the calculators have been overhauled to provide you with faster access to your highscore data. While this is the most prevalent change, keen users will notices a variety of interface tweaks and improvements. Less obvious are the efficiency enhancements, which have allowed me to add all of these features while simultaneously cutting back on the lines of code.

While most of the features launched flawlessly, I'd like to thank G3m N M, and the Runesource Team for their feedback. Should anyone else experience any difficulties, or problems, feel free to contact me through the forums or on our IRC channel. If you'd prefer, you can always send me an email at filoni@gmail.com.

Gnomes have Green Thumbs

This fine gnome quest is a follow up on the one that yielded the crystal saw.
It will take you on a tour through Gnomish history and just be glad it turned out the way it did, or else those little blighters would be poking us in the shins with their spears and things!
Anyway, we get to meet a new spirit tree which I always think is a good thing and some new monsters.
All in all good fun, but find out for yourself and follow The Path of Glouphrie.

A Fairy Tale Part III

So it's 9am and you realise you don't have a meaningless filler-quest for the week. What do you do? If you're making Runescape, you copy three well known childrens fairy tales into a crazy mixmash of a quest.

It's not that long or hard and the reward is quite a lot of xp and a practically useless hat. It's worth doing and, in places, manages to scrape the funny side of absurdity. If you need a guide, you know we've got it.

It's come to my attention that email pretending to be from this domain (runesource.co.uk) is being used by spammers to advertise anything from viagra to stockmarket frauds.

It is not hard to falsify the address email appears to be from as long as the domain exists and this is what is happening. I have no control over these spammers, I don't even know who they are, they're simply typing our domain name into the "Who should I pretend this message is from" box.

All The Small Things

Sometimes it's the changes they don't announce that have the most effect. If anyone thinks that Dorgesh-Kaan is anything but a functionally challenged excuse for the animators and artists to strut their stuff, I'd like to hear from them.

The big update done then wasn't a sparsely populated city of uselessness, no. The real update and the one we're all going to thank them for is how they changed how your inventory and controls interact with your character.

Previously, changing combat type, activating or deactivating a prayer or toggling run or doing many other things while fighting would mean you stop fighting and if you don't have auto-retal turned on then you'd have to give the command to attack again. It isn't just combat either, many things that would interrupt you walking or running can now be done on the move; Alchemy, fletching, potion-making can now all be done while you're moving.

The interface change not so long ago moved many controls further from the user and took some information further away too, two stalwarts of bad design though the limited space in an game designed for 1995 monitors is of course a factor. Anything that smooths out the controlling and playing experience by forcing fewer interruptions to the player's commands is a very good thing and a step most certainly in the right direction.

Domus Dorgeshuuni

This fine day where march decides to rain, snow, hail and particularly blow arctic winds at us, Jagex decides to warm our chilled bones slightly by releasing a city and some visual updates.

Let's start with the lesser update, visuals of monsters. Chicken, looks good, better than the white tiny little thing. But looking at them from behind shows you they've got their wings spread out... can't keep their balance? Are they drunk? The colours and head movements (scratching and pecking of self) come across as natural and nice. Good, but can be improved.
Cow. In short, looks like a lizard. The ones in Zanaris I checked out do anyway. Some sort of green-black with white... I'd not dare wear a jacket made from their leather! Nope, that one just doesn't work with me.
Rabbit, yeah cool. Bit hyperactive and I was wondering if there was a black rabbit also. Was only seeing brown and white, with nice movements and look.
The "Bunny" as found near the musical tree in the Fremennik Province remains unchanged... different monster for the same purpose. Yeah, rabbit's good.

Next up, Dorgesh-Kaan.
One city full of cave goblins. Overall feel is quite good. Though it has to be said that the multiple levels can cause a bit of confusion as to where you are. Some of these levels are very deserted, the lower one and the one above that tend to be populated. I love the goblin nursery, I love the mess the marketplace is. It makes towns come alive. These are the kinds of things we want to see in all other towns of Gielinor!
The agility course is hard, so it's hard to make a good assesment of it. It looks interesting both in the way the course works and the experience that's available. Shame you need a light source to get into this area.
And in this area also reside the higher level cave bugs and the Molanisk. Which don't seem to serve a point...
There's a fairy ring and a shortcut to the Kalphite Lair. However again, the drawback is that you need a lightsource (and a tinderbox?), which really means you spend more inventory spaces to get to the Kalphites than you would coming from the desert. And do you need the light in inventory when you fairy-ring into the town? How annoying if that's true... (I've not tested it).

Overall verdict of this week's update: Yeah, definately nice updates today. But some things could be advanced, like the light-requirement in the agilitity course cave, maybe through a further quest? Just shooting off random thoughts now. Go check it out!

We didn't say anything about last week's updates, but we've been temple-trekking a bit in the last week and have been enjoying it. The fact you can now take people back to Burgh de Rott really helped with making it a more sensible game, though it has to be said that silver "weapons" vs Juvinate are not all weapons. The silver bolt did not work. These guys can take out your escorted npc in no time if they focus on him or her. Still, quite fun and a nice change.

Ok, I take that back

Last time we got that new anchor thingy. It was a good weapon, and worth using, if a little on the cheap side. I'm sorry to report that now it isn't. According to The Powers That Be " In particular, we've increased its strength bonus to 87, but its attack speed has been reduced very slightly, as befits such a heavy item.".

Okay, so it's now less powerful and no better than, say, a dragon longsword because it's been reduced to battleaxe speed. This just adds insult to injury: "We have also increased the price, as we felt it was too cheap for such a powerful weapon. " Such a powerful weapon? They made it not powerful by screwing with the speed, why call it powerful a few lines down? They've just made another Granite Maul, albeit one that weighs half a ton. Don't they learn?

You can read the whole depressing tale here. I'll be getting some friendly player to kill me for the 230k I'll drop, that's all this thing's good for now. We have to compare like with like, so let's do that.
Dragon Battleaxe + Rune Defender (two hands used) +89 attack, +90 strength, speed "4".
Barrelchest Anchor (two hands used) +80 attack, +87 strength, speed "4".

You tell me, is an anchor worth 500k more than a dragon battleaxe and a rune defender when its performance is slightly inferior?

Speeds referenced from this kb article.

While our item database is still being worked on you could find Filoni's stats tracker very interesting. Here's an example of one of the graphs, you can make your own.

There's a file hoster at upload.hattix.co.uk that you can use for hosting images, videos or anything else for posting on forums or sending to friends or whatever. Not quite as glamorous as Filoni's pretty graphs but still useful.

Proactivity

Through what seems to be a random Googling, Kami told me about a rather dodgy site calling itself "RuneSource", hosted at Freewebs. Upon closer inspection, this site was offering "calculators" and "bots" for download. So I downloaded two of them and analysed them. After all, we're a "hack and scam" site ourselves according to Jagex, who were nice enough to tell me so when they banned my player, (though I'm yet to find out how another of my players was banned for "buying and selling copyrighted Jagex property", whatever that means) maybe we could get some tips?

Both were keyloggers and one of them contained an automated mailer, presumably to communicate back with whoever was running the trojans. So I did what needed to be done and reported the site to Freewebs for abuse of their Terms of Service.

What happened? This used to be the trojan download page. As you can see, it isn't anymore. Yes, we got the site suspended. We're looking out for you whether you know it or not.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to openly thank Freewebs for their rapid response to my complaint, under five days where the average response is "never". If you want a free (or paid, they do do paid hosting) website then this kind of service is the sort of thing you look out for, I imagine you can do a lot worse than sign up with Freewebs.
